Part 3: Double meaning ironic poems
This section, all the answers can be read two different ways.

Question 1:

1. going to make a note
2. eyes have aged

(before Sakurai answer the first time around for this question)
Ueda; Too bad. It isn't "try to write." Well, then, anything other than "aibeyasa" (share room) will be better than that first answer.
Sakurai: Yeah.
Ueda: Wait, this is something I can't forget: "Nu---do-wa-do---nu"
Sakurai: AH! I completely forgot about it! *bonk bonk bonk* Totally slipped my mind.
Ueda: Let's try to wipe out this bad answer.

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_32.20_[2013.08.21_21.21.24]

(second round of answering question 3)
Sakurai: Write a note
Hyadain: Refreshing
Ueda: Too bad! Whenever this person gives a thumbs up, it's a guaranteed wrong answer.
Ueda: It's not your thumb's fault!

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_36.00_[2013.08.21_21.24.15]

Question 4:

Wood pencils, their era has ended, ○○○○○
Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_38.10_[2013.08.21_21.25.47]
1. they've evolved
2. can I borrow some lead?

(after Miura answers)
Sakurai: What's wrong with you?! What's-wrong-with-you?!
Pekepon: Yay! She said the same wrong answer!
Ueda: She has really done it! She had said same wrong answer as Pan-kun! Even though that answer was wrong. Sakurai, she really did it, right?
Sakurai: Sorry, but I feel kind frightened.
Toshi: I had no idea that there would be a girl chimpanze here!
Ueda and Toshi: Pan-chan!
Toshi: You've really helped us!

(after the explanation)
Ueda: Things have really gotten really gloomy on the Nazotoki side
Ijuin: Captain, say something to cheer her up!
Sakurai: We're still in the lead! If anything, the perfect lead!
Toshi: What does "perfect" mean?!
Ueda: He's completely flustered!

Part 4: Rearrangeable ironic poems

Waking up early, a trip to the beach, ○○○○○
Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_42.35_[2013.08.21_21.27.34]
For sunbathing

And so Nazotoki wins while the other team gets hit over the head!
Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_44.58_[2013.08.21_21.28.01]

Ueda: Sakurai, any comments?
Sakurai: Sure enough, the "nu---do-wa-do---nu" answer has left a trail.
Ueda: It unexpectedly trailed on
Sakurai: I wanted to "shuflle shuffle shuffle" and yell "Yay!" at the end.
Ueda: What do you think of the Pan-kun that took away that chance?
Sakurai: He's despicably unbearable

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_45.12_[2013.08.21_21.28.21]

Yay! Done~! I hope this gave you a better idea of what went on in this game. I have no idea how many times I've watched this (video on loop), and it still makes me laugh! This section of the show in Pekepon is probably one of the hardest out of all of their games (though, I've watched their honorific language game, and it's equally as hard). I think it really brought out the sheer brilliant side, as well has his human side, meaning that even though he may be smart and a top idol, he can still unintentionally blurt out a ridiculous answer!

Hope you enjoyed reading!

Pekepon SP - Nazotoki SP Part 2 (Partial Translation)

Japanese palindromes romanized don't really make any sense, so I will put a hyphen between each romanized hiragana. For example, ka-ki-ku-ki-ka.

Question 1

Slightly overweight, ○○○○○○, gradually increases
Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_15.06_[2013.08.21_21.06.37]
Meaning: Every time she looks, the sagging

Within minutes of the first question being read:
Sakurai: Ah! I know it!
Ueda: Really, you solved it?
Sakurai: I know it hands down!

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_16.44_[2013.08.21_21.09.10]

Sakurai: Kana-chan, are you blind?
Ueda: There's the famous line from the drama!
Inagihara; He's so cool~
Pekepon (other members) + Ueda: He's insulting you!

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_17.31_[2013.08.21_21.10.43]

Question 2

A lecture, ○○○○○○, manju
Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_18.14_[2013.08.21_21.11.30]
Meaning: to the kid who ate two
(t/n: I had to flip the sentence structure or it wouldn't make any sense in English)

Question 3

Work schedule, ○○○○○○, when is your day off?
Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_19.25_[2013.08.21_21.12.44]
Meaning: Write down your plan

Question 4

 The butler, ○○○○○○, difficult case
Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_22.47_[2013.08.21_21.14.17]
Meaning: unsolvable without him

Ueda: Next up is Hyadain. Let's answer the next question correctly.
Hyadain: Right. If I don't answer the next question correctly, I won't be asked back onto the show!
Ueda: It's a mystery as to why you were called up this time.

(After the question is read)
Ueda: This is a rare question. Nazotoki Team, well, if possible Sakurai should be the one to answer this question. Of course, if Hyadain solves this question, it wouldn't be a problem either.
Hyadain: This is a question I shouldn't answer.
Sakurai: That's not true! Please solve it!
Ueda: Somehow do your best to answer it. Hyadain, Answer time!

(Hyadain answer incorrectly)
Ueda: Too bad! He still hasn't answered one question right tonight.
Sakurai: Hyadain, put more effort into this game!
Hyadain: I'm sorry! Just as you say!
Sakurai: I'm really sorry for saying it as we're meeting for the first time, but... put more effort into this game!
Hyadain: I'm really sorry!

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_23.47_[2013.08.21_21.14.31]

Ueda: Probably Hyadain is the most disliked among Sakurai's relatives. Well then, on the other hand, chubby-chan (girl in pink) is tilting her head in confusion. Then, Sakurai, this question is targeted for you, but nothing has come to mind.
(t/n: Ueda was referring to question 1 of the word "sagging," but it kind of doesn't make sense in English)
Sakurai: Sorry, but yes, nothing has come to mind.
Ueda: Truth be told you shouldn't be the one to talk!
Pekepon: That's right!

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_24.07_[2013.08.21_21.15.00]

(after Inagihara answers)
Ueda: Well then, let's give this question for [Sakurai] to answer. Has anything popped in your mind?
Sakurai: Nothing at all...
Ueda: We'll give you a hint then.
Sakurai: Please give me the hint!
Ueda: Please use the hint to help solve the answer.
Hint: The first and last hiragana in the second verse is "nu"
Everyone: EH?! "NU"?!
Ueda: Well then, answer time!
Sakurai: Wait a second! Waitasecond! Wait!
Hyadain: My stomach's starting to hurt!
[Stalling for time]
Ueda: If you're going to make a commotion, go home! Go home! Well, then, it's time for Nazotoki team's Sakurai to answer the question. Answer time!
Sakurai: Nu---do-wa-do---nu (t/n: What he says makes absolutely no sense, so the reason why they laugh is because a top idol came up with this ridiculous answer)

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_25.37_[2013.08.21_21.17.42]

Pekepon: What kind of answer is that?
Toshi: What is "Do---nu"?
Sakurai: What just happened? What was that?
Ueda: Johnny's does this kind of thing on occasion! You know, on a question about a mixer (where young people meet others), Tegoshi answered, "Let's do it," to some absurdity

There wasn't much talking this time around, but that last part certainly has left a new weird impression of Sakurai. What do you think?

Part 3 I hope to get up sometime next week, but I probably should start doing my paper this weekend. Until then~.

Pekepon SP - Nazotoki Promo Part 1 (partial translation)

Sorry for the image-heavy post, but I didn't think the entry would look good without pictures. I cut out some of the more boring dialogue and only translated the more interesting parts with Sakurai in them because there's a ton of talking. Hopefully you can get a general idea of what goes on.

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_00.02_[2013.08.21_21.28.45]

The game is split into 4 parts:
1. Ironic riddle poems - first and second verse of the poem give hints to the answer which are homonyms
2. Palindrome poems
3. Double meaning ironic poems - the last verse can be read two ways to give it a double meaning
4. Rearrangeable ironic poems - the hiragana in the first verse can be rearranged

Nazotoki Team (left to right)

Ijuin Hikaru - Comedian, radio host, former rakugo storyteller (mainly seen on Q-sama quiz show and some other shows)
Hyadain - Singer, songwriter (no idea who he is, but he's worked on some SMAP and Kiss-my-ft2 songs)
Miura Naoko - Talent (mainly seen on Q-sama quiz show)
Sakurai Sho

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_00.14_[2013.08.21_21.29.07]

The show starts out with Pekepon team wondering if anyone was in the movie.
Arita: Ijuin, did you appear in the movie?
Toshi and Taka: He didn't appear...
Ijuin: I helped prepare the sets...
Pekepon: Behind-the-scenes?!
Arita: Hyadain, didi you appear?
Hyadain: I helped a little as a soundman...
Pekepon: Behind-the-scenes?!
Ueda: Miura, you also?
Miura: I want to if I have the chance.
Pekepon: You weren't in the movie at all!
Sakurai: Last time News appeared on the show, their loss was atrocious, so as [Johnny's]...
[News: Disasterous defeat with no luck]
(huge overlap, but but what Sakurai says is ironic because his team is neither Johnny's or anyone from Nazotoki)
Ueda: Instead of "Nazotoki Team," why don't you just name your team "Sakurai Team?"
Sakurai: Sorry, but I want to use the name "Nazotoki Team."
Ueda: Why? It doesn't really matter if you use "Sakurai Team"
Sakurai: Well it's because tomorrow the movie "Nazotoki wa Dinner no Atode" will be released. I was able to act in the 2011 drama and so...
Sakurai: Sorry, but I really want to use "Nazotoki Team," please

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_01.06_[2013.08.21_20.55.21]

Arita: But the real problem is how are you with those?
Ueda: Ironic poems?
Toshi: Because Sakurai has a marvelous profile of being a newscaster and such, if he can't solve these, it might remain in his profile
Ueda: That's if he can't answer them at all, right? Would you take his place in a news program?
Pekepon: We'll do New Zero!
Ueda: Who will?
Pekepon: We will!
Ueda: Put me in as a candidate too!
Pekepon: You're one for real!
Ueda: Why am I the only "real" one? (t/n: He's does a late-night news show)
Pekepon: It was just a joke!

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_01.38_[2013.08.21_20.56.00]

From here on out, it will basically be explaining the ironic poems. These are extremely hard to translate, so please bear with me. I'll translate some of the dialogue in between, but not all of it.

Question 1:

Unusual, an animal that blooms, ○○○○○○
Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_02.30_[2013.08.21_20.56.55]
Another reading for the kanji 珍しい (mezurashii) is "chin" [the n sort of has an m sound]
A flower that blooms is "pansy"
Chin + pansy = chimpanze
[weird, but it works in Japanese because of the sounds]

Ueda: Sakurai, as expected you'll make it with this team.
Sakurai: With tons of leeway!
Ijuin: If you are helpful to Sakurai, you will be highly regarded by his relatives!
(Everyone laughs)

Question 2:

Two smalls, said twice by a doctor, ○○○○○
Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_03.46_[2013.08.21_20.58.32]
Another reading for 小さい (chiisai) is "shou"
Twice is 二回 (nikai)

Shou + nikai = shounikai 小児科医 which means pediatrician

Sakurai and Miura figured out the answer within the first few seconds of the question being read.
Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_03.55_[2013.08.21_20.58.47]
(Before the answers begin)
Arita: Pan, do you know the answer?
Toshi: Who are you calling "Pan-kun?
(Arita is making fun of Toshi who always gets made fun of for looking like a monkey. Pan-kun is from Shimura Doubutsu En.)

(After the answering)
Sakurai: I felt Pan-kun's kindness (t//n: this was for answering wrong, but his answer was almost complete)
Toshi: Who are you calling Pan-kun?
Ijuin: You'll be highly regarded by his relatives!
Ueda: You were a help to Sakurai!
Toshi: Shut up!

Question 3: (this is a hard question to translate)

Another person, a room where love begins, ○○○○○
Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_05.40_[2013.08.21_20.59.43]

Love can be either "Ai" (愛) or "Koi" (恋). This case is "Koi"
A room is "shitsu" (室)

Koi + Shitsu = Kouishitsu (更衣室) which is locker room

Taka's (guy in yellow) answer: One room

Ueda: Can I ask you for an explanation of your answer?
Taka: I thought that if both people were always in a room together, they would start to like each other.
Pekepon (other members): That maybe so
Ueda: Up next is Hyadain. How about this question?
Hyadain: In reality, I'm good-for-nothing in this line-up.
Ueda: But in the past you came, you've done well...
Hyadain: I've only answered one question correctly out of all those times.
Ueda: Oh, I see. You've answered correctly 1 out of 8 questions. Unexpectedly a piece of junk. All this time you haven't really done anything

Ueda: So, Sakurai, just to make trouble for Inagihara, you really know the answer?
Sakura: I've completely solved the riddle.
Everyone: Really?
Ueda: Well then, here's a hint.
Hint: This room can be used when you go to the beach or pool
Ueda: All right, it's answer time... wait a sec?! On the contrary he's starting to doubt his answer! Does he truly know the answer?
Sakurai: The beach?!
Ueda: Sakura, it's answer time!

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_08.23_[2013.08.21_21.00.56]

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_09.16_[2013.08.21_21.02.10]

Sakurai: Aibeyasa (相部屋さ) (t/n: Ai (愛 love) + Heya (部屋 room) = Aibeya (meaning share room), but it doesn't fit the puzzle, so he puts a sa at the end)
Ueda: This is uncool! He had such confidence. Moreover, he struck a pose with his answer "aibeyasa"

Ueda: Of course, Sakurai, I understand your answer
Sakurai: I was torn between "aibeyada" and "aibeyasa" (t/n: da and sa don't really mean anything in this case. It's just to fill the empty slot in the answer.)
Ueda: That's trivial in this case
Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_10.15_[2013.08.21_21.03.30]

Question 4: (hard to translate poem)

Unintentionally, a disappearing ball, ○○○○○

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_11.00_[2013.08.21_21.07.40]

Another word for unintentional in Japanese is "futto."
"Saru" (去る) has the meaning to be gone. It doesn't quite sound right in English though.

Futto + saru = Futtosaru (フットサル) which means futsal (indoor soccer)

Ueda: This question, Sakurai, you of course knew?
Sakurai: I knew this question. The reason is because I've played futsal. The first answer that came to mind was futsal and soccer when I saw the word "ball."
Ueda: However you're "Aha!" came relatively slow.
Sakurai (mouthing): Crap. Crap. Crap.

Sakurai - Pekepon SP - Nazodi Promo [2013.08.02] MQ.avi_snapshot_14.33_[2013.08.21_21.04.53]

This is part one of probably three depending on how long the other parts will be.
Questions, comments are always welcome. Feel free to flail as well! (I didn't want to put in my flails as they might get in the way of my translation.) These poems are extremely hard to translate, so hopefully I didn't botch them. Though I think the palindrome ones might kill me next... Until then~.

Translation Feedback

I decided to put this up because this is my first time translating, and I am still learning the ins and outs of getting from one language to the other, so if you could give me some feedback, that would be great. However, I will not accept things like "This was translated wrong," or "This should be translated this way." I'm looking for is more if the translations are easily readable and if it flows logically. Though, if you have any other suggestions, please don't hesitate to comment on that either. Only, please don't go slamming me for having wrong translations because I feel that translation is an art and there are many interpretations to what people think and say.

I hope you have enjoyed what I have translated so far~.

FNS Perf

I don't want to say anything bad about Arashi, but I will say that pop music is so dependent on auto tune when it comes to covering up pitchiness, and that's why when it comes to singing live, singers can't sing properly.

*sigh* Actually, I would like to try to live one day without perfect pitch... just one day so that I can understand what it's like to attain relative pitch. Or, maybe I should just cut off my ears....

Translating School

I rarely update here anymore... I've been so busy with studying that I don't really think about writing all that much lately. But, one good news that has come out in the past few days is that I got into translating school which I am so ecstatic about! Now all I have is the JLPT N1 and I don't have to study so hard anymore. It's such a relief that I will continue my Japanese studies and come one step closer to my dream of becoming a translator!

Ok, I think I really fail this post... nothing else to talk about, so I will just leave it at this...

Excuse me, mademoiselle.... the first entry

Hello, I'm a staff member.
My pen name is Smile.
Pleased to meet you.

The official blog has finally started!
Top batter in Fuji Television's October season.
From now, the staff will be blogging this and that,
But program promotions, things relating to the whole project
will be me my main writing focus, so please enjoy reading!

Moving along, in VS Arashi being aired on September 8th, there was a talk segment...
Arashi, thank you very much!
What kind of talk segment it was? Please look forward to watching on VS Arashi!

So, today's topic is the project start up.
The talk of making "Nazotoki ha Dinner no Atode" into a drama in Fuji Television's project planning department began roughly a year ago from now.

In the midst of my seniors starting up the planning process, the novel surprisingly became a best seller and even took the Bookstore Grand Prize...

Then, as the starring role of the "sharped-tongued butler - Kageyama,"
We welcomed none other than
Sakurai Sho-san!
The part of storyteller "Lady Detective - Reiko" is
Kitagawa Keiko!
If you notice, it has become something major. Then, the other day, it was announced that the part of "Chief inspector Kazamatsuri" was going to be played by... believe it or not...
Shiina Kippei san!
I'm exhilarated over this never before gorgeous cast!
Simply because it's a popular novel, there is huge hype over the making of the drama. However, novels and dramas become adverse.
In making the drama,
Which direction to take?
In what taste?
How will it develop?
The production team repeatedly probed into it.

The first preliminary discussion was in April.
From that point, in less than no time, the preparation phase had past...
The other day, within a short period of time of holding a script rehearsal and a poster photoshoot, seeing the actors skillfully grasping their roles in character,
It shouldn't be only me who was thinking,
"This will be awesome!"
Along with clenching their fist in triumph near the chest .

After a painstaking poster, it seems to be an unprecedented work.
A first time experiment in poster history (is there even such a thing?) that has an unexpected catch to it!
After, we did the teaser CM, but it has become a lovely CM (however many times it's watched, there's something new to discover.)
It will be aired on the last episode of "Zettai Reido," so please look forward to it!

Kuroiwa-sensei, directors, as well as producers and all the staff, we all want to make a fun-filled drama that has never been seen before!
A lot of things have happened in this year, but the 3 months until Christmas,
Thrilling and heart-pumping,
This is a drama we aim for!

While merrily being with friends or sweetheart, or having a family gathering,
Please look forward to
"After dinner."

Please also spread the word!
So, next entry (probably someone other than me)
I would like to talk about the fitting, gesture coaching,
Poster and CM shooting that was held a few days ago.
Don't forget.
Till then...

LOL, I wonder why I stayed up all night to translate this...
